What changes when you elope
Your state sets the earliest date you can legally marry
Lock the paperwork before the location, because the gap between states is days, not hours. Clark County, Nevada states plainly that there is no waiting period and issues the license the day you apply. Chester County, Pennsylvania makes you wait three days, and the license is then valid for 60. Connecticut adds a 48-hour wait from October 1, 2026, ending same-day weddings there, with the license expiring after 65 days. Colorado has no wait, but the license must be used within 35 days of issue. Waiting periods also run from different events — some from application, some from issue — so never plan to the statutory minimum. Apply at least a week out, and ask your issuing office whether the license works statewide or only where it was issued.
A few states let you marry yourselves. Most do not
Colorado permits self-solemnization under C.R.S. 14-2-109: the two of you sign, no officiant and no witnesses, on a $30 license good for 35 days. Pennsylvania issues a self-uniting license signed by the couple and two witnesses under 23 Pa.C.S. 1502; a 2007 federal ruling arising from an Allegheny County denial established that it cannot be reserved for Quakers or any other faith, but you have to ask the clerk for that license format before the application starts. Alabama requires no officiant and no ceremony at all. Everywhere else you need someone that state authorizes, and you should confirm it with the issuing office rather than with the officiant before you pay a deposit.
Witnesses are a legal requirement, and the number is never the same twice
There is no US witness count, so take yours from your own issuing office. Colorado needs none. Nevada needs at least one present besides the person performing the ceremony under NRS 122.110 — which catches out couples who picked Las Vegas precisely because it is frictionless and then turn up as a party of two. California's public marriage license names at least one and no more than two witnesses under Family Code 359, while its confidential license needs none. A Pennsylvania self-uniting certificate takes two. Some clerks are stricter than their own state guidance and want adult witnesses with photo ID. Settle this early, because it decides who physically has to be in the room.
The money moves from catering to permits and filing fees
Without a reception you lose the biggest line in a normal wedding budget, and on public land a permit often replaces it. Rocky Mountain National Park requires a Special Use Permit for a wedding, elopement or vow renewal — the trigger is two or more people engaging in the activity — charges a non-refundable $300 administrative fee, restricts ceremonies to a fixed list of named sites with group caps from 10 to 30 people, opens applications a year ahead, and already shows most 2026 dates full. Government fees are small but never identical: $102 in Clark County, $75 in Chester County, $30 in Colorado's Jefferson and El Paso counties, plus a recording fee in Alabama. Whatever you do cater, ask for an all-in number rather than a headline one.
