Perth's South Asian population is concentrated in the south-east and south — Canning Vale, Southern River, Harrisdale, Piara Waters, Thornlie and Baldivis — with a northern cluster around Ellenbrook and Bennett Springs. Punjabi and Malayali families are particularly well represented, alongside a strong professional presence in mining, engineering and healthcare.
Distance is the defining feature. Perth is a four to five hour flight from the eastern capitals, so interstate matches are a genuine decision about relocation rather than a weekend commute, and families tend to address that upfront.
Perth's South Asian Muslim community — Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan families — is concentrated around Thornlie, Canning Vale, Southern River and Mirrabooka, within a Western Australian Muslim community whose history in the state goes back to the cameleers of the nineteenth century. Community life runs through the masjids and Islamic schools, and introductions remain largely family and imam led.
