Local context
Perth's South Asian population is concentrated in the south-east and south — Canning Vale, Southern River, Harrisdale, Piara Waters, Thornlie and Baldivis — with a northern cluster around Ellenbrook and Bennett Springs. Punjabi and Malayali families are particularly well represented, alongside a strong professional presence in mining, engineering and healthcare.
Distance is the defining feature. Perth is a four to five hour flight from the eastern capitals, so interstate matches are a genuine decision about relocation rather than a weekend commute, and families tend to address that upfront.
Perth's Tamil community is smaller than the eastern capitals' but well organised, with families spread through Canning Vale, Southern River, Thornlie and Willetton and a strong presence in engineering, IT and healthcare. Both Tamil Nadu and Sri Lankan Tamil families are represented, and community events pull from across the metropolitan area rather than from any single suburb.

Australia's Tamil community has two distinct histories running alongside each other: families who came from Tamil Nadu, largely through skilled migration since the 1990s, and Sri Lankan Tamil families, many of whom arrived earlier and under very different circumstances. Both are strongly represented in Australian matrimony, and plenty of matches cross between them.
Language holds on well here. Tamil weekend schools operate in every major city, Thai Pongal and Tamil New Year fill community halls each year, and a lot of second-generation members speak Tamil at home even when they write in English.
