Communities
Where each community actually lives in each city, the places it gathers, and what families in it tend to weigh in a match. Written by us, not scraped from anywhere.
Melbourne · VIC
Melbourne holds the largest South Asian population in the country, spread across three distinct arcs: the western growth corridor through Tarneit, Truganina, Point Cook and Werribee; the northern corridor through Craigieburn, Roxburgh Park and Mickleham; and the established south-east through Clayton, Springvale, Dandenong, Glen Waverley and out to Cranbourne and Pakenham.
Sydney · NSW
Sydney's South Asian community is centred on the west and north-west: Harris Park and Parramatta, where Wigram Street has been the community's high street for two decades, then out through Westmead, Toongabbie, Girraween, Blacktown, Quakers Hill, Schofields, Kellyville and Glenwood, with a second concentration through Lakemba, Punchbowl and Bankstown.
Brisbane · QLD
Brisbane's South Asian community sits mainly south of the river — Sunnybank, Runcorn, Calamvale, Stretton and Eight Mile Plains — with rapid growth west through Springfield Lakes, Forest Lake, Redbank Plains and Ipswich, and a newer cluster north around North Lakes and Mango Hill.
Perth · WA
Perth's South Asian population is concentrated in the south-east and south — Canning Vale, Southern River, Harrisdale, Piara Waters, Thornlie and Baldivis — with a northern cluster around Ellenbrook and Bennett Springs. Punjabi and Malayali families are particularly well represented, alongside a strong professional presence in mining, engineering and healthcare.
Adelaide · SA
Adelaide's South Asian community is anchored around Mawson Lakes and the northern suburbs — Salisbury, Munno Para, Andrews Farm and Golden Grove — with a substantial student and early-career population attached to the universities and the health services.
Canberra · ACT
Canberra's migrant communities are young, professional and concentrated by the city's shape: the Gungahlin corridor — Gungahlin, Franklin, Harrison, Casey — holds much of the newer Indian, Nepalese and Chinese settlement, with older community life spread through Belconnen and the south. Public service, the universities and health employ a large share of members.
Gold Coast · QLD
The Gold Coast's communities are newer and smaller than Brisbane's, spread through Southport, Labrador, Parkwood and the growth corridors toward Coomera — and tightly linked to Brisbane's community life an hour north, where the larger temples, churches and festival events sit.
Newcastle · NSW
Newcastle anchors the Hunter — a university city with a large health workforce, which is exactly where its migrant communities have grown: doctors, nurses and postgraduate students who came for work or study and stayed for the housing and the coast.
Hobart · TAS
Hobart has quietly become one of the fastest-growing small capitals for new migration, with the Nepalese, Indian and Chinese communities the most visible — built substantially on the university and the state's skilled-migration pathways, and settled through Sandy Bay, Glenorchy and the northern suburbs.
Darwin · NT
Darwin is the most multicultural small capital in the country per head of population: one of Australia's most established Filipino communities, a historic Greek community with deep Kalymnian roots, and growing Indian and Nepalese populations, spread through Casuarina, the northern suburbs and Palmerston.
